Witness Camera

Record with the front and rear camera at once on iPhone and Android

The scene and the person recording it, in the same session.

Recording both cameras at once documents the scene and the person filming it, which can matter when someone later disputes who said or did what. This page explains how Witness does it, and why quality settings can turn it off. Written by the developer of Witness Camera, so read it with that in mind; where another approach is better, it says so.

Short answer. Witness can record the front and rear cameras at the same time as two separate videos, free, at up to 1080p and 30 fps in H.264. Pro can also produce one combined picture-in-picture video with the front camera as a small inset, in addition to the two files. Anything above 1080p30 H.264, including 4K, 60 fps, Apple Log, HEVC or ProRes, turns the front camera off, because two cameras at once are limited by the hardware. On Android, dual-camera mode is capped at 720p per camera and depends on the phone supporting concurrent cameras.

What you get

Why quality settings turn it off

Running two cameras at once is only guaranteed in the formats the hardware can sustain, in practice 1080p, 30 fps and H.264, never Apple Log. If you choose anything higher, Witness records only the rear camera. The Pro page says which setting turned the front camera off and offers a button to restore the dual-camera settings.

Device support

When to use it

Dual camera suits a recorded conversation or a stop where the interaction matters as much as the surroundings. For a protest or an event where the footage must leave the phone quickly, a single camera at 1080p keeps files smaller. See how Pro works for the trade-offs.

Questions

Can Witness record both cameras at once?

Yes, on phones that support it, as two separate videos at up to 1080p and 30 fps in H.264. Pro can add a combined picture-in-picture video.

Why did my front camera switch off?

Because a higher setting, such as 4K, 60 fps, Apple Log, HEVC or ProRes, is selected, and two cameras at once are limited to 1080p30 H.264. The Pro page shows which setting caused it.

Does dual camera work on Android?

On phones that report concurrent camera support, capped at 720p per camera. Some phones do not support it and fall back to a single camera.

Is the picture-in-picture video free?

No, the combined video is a Pro feature. The two separate videos are free.
