Stealth mode camera apps for iPhone and Android: what they can and cannot hide
A dark screen is possible. Undetectable recording is not.
Searches for a stealth camera usually mean one of two things: a phone that does not look like it is recording, or recording nobody can detect. The first is possible, the second is not on a current phone. This page says exactly where the line is. Written by the developer of Witness Camera, so read it with that in mind; where another approach is better, it says so.
Short answer. A stealth or black-screen camera app can keep the display dark so the phone does not look like a camera. On iPhone it does this by keeping the app in the foreground at zero brightness, and on Android it can keep recording with the screen off through a foreground service. No app can hide the recording indicators: iOS shows a green dot for the camera and an orange dot for the microphone, and Android shows a notification and, on Android 12 and later, a privacy dot. Whether a covert recording is lawful depends on the country and on who is being recorded. Witness Camera is a free black-screen recorder that uploads while it records.
What a black-screen recorder can do
- Keep the screen dark. On iPhone the display cannot be genuinely powered off while the camera runs, so the app stays in the foreground and sets brightness to zero. On an OLED iPhone that looks like a phone that is off. Our full explanation covers the failure modes: leaving the app, a call or the phone locking will stop the recording.
- Keep recording with the screen off on Android. Android allows capture inside a foreground service, so recording continues when the screen turns off.
- Make the phone look idle, so you can hold it openly without a visible viewfinder pointed at someone. Safety guidance for filming police says to hold the phone openly, not half-hidden.
What no app can hide
- iPhone: since iOS 14 a green dot shows while the camera is in use and an orange dot for the microphone. Apps cannot switch them off. At zero brightness they are still drawn, just unlit with the rest of the display.
- Android: Android requires a notification for a foreground service. Witness uses the lowest-importance channel, which suppresses the status-bar icon and sound, and marks it private for the lock screen, but anyone who pulls down the notification shade can see it. On Android 12 and later, secondary sources also report a green privacy dot whenever the camera or microphone is in use.
- Any app that claims undetectable recording on a current phone is describing something it cannot do.
The legal question comes first
A dark screen changes what a recording looks like, not whether you may make it. Filming on-duty police in a public place is protected in many countries, with limits that differ, and our country guides cover several. Recording private individuals is a different matter: some places require every party to a conversation to consent, and recording where people expect privacy is an offence almost everywhere. Sound is regulated separately in some countries, for example under section 201 of the German Strafgesetzbuch, and Witness always records sound.
Why you might want a dark screen anyway
- The phone does not read as a camera, which makes it safer to hold in plain sight.
- A bright screen draws attention and drains the battery.
- A phone in a pocket, pointing outward, can keep recording while your hands stay free.
- Witness also uploads every 15 seconds while recording, so footage can leave the phone before it can be taken. That, not concealment, is the point.
If you want a normal screen, Witness has a viewfinder you can turn on from the Home screen, and toggle while recording.
Questions
Is there a stealth camera app that cannot be detected?
No, not on a current phone. iOS shows a green camera dot and an orange microphone dot that apps cannot disable, and Android shows a notification and, on Android 12 and later, a privacy indicator.
Can an iPhone record with the screen off?
Not with the display genuinely powered down. An app can stay in the foreground at zero brightness, which looks like a phone that is off. Leaving the app or locking the phone stops the recording.
Can Android record with the screen off?
Yes, inside a foreground service, which Android requires to show a notification. Witness makes it as quiet as the platform allows but cannot hide it.
Is covert recording legal?
It depends on the country, on who is recorded and on whether sound is involved. Filming on-duty police in public is protected in many places, while recording private conversations can require everyone's consent. Check the rules where you are. This is not legal advice.
